Dropbox (Interview Waiver): Eligibility, Process and Surprises
5 min read · Updated July 12, 2026

'Dropbox' is the community's name for the interview waiver — submitting your passport and documents without a consular interview. It saves the hardest-to-get resource in Indian stamping trips (an interview slot), but its eligibility rules have changed repeatedly, so treat every secondhand rule as expired until the portal confirms it.
How eligibility actually works
The State Department authorizes interview waivers for defined groups — historically centered on renewals in the same visa classification within a set window after the prior visa expired, plus certain age bands (children and older applicants). The qualifying window has moved between 12 and 48 months in different periods, and category coverage has shifted with policy updates.
Because of that churn, there is exactly one reliable source: the eligibility questionnaire on the official India portal (USTravelDocs), answered honestly at the moment you book. Prior refusals, certain annotations, or changed biographic details commonly knock applicants back to interviews regardless of renewals math.
The process when you qualify
Complete the DS-160, pay the MRV fee, answer the questionnaire; if offered the waiver, book a document drop-off slot at a Visa Application Center. Submit: passport, DS-160 confirmation, the drop-off confirmation letter, photo per specifications, prior passport containing the old visa (or its details), and category documents (I-797/LCA for H-1B renewals, I-20 for F-1).
Then the passport travels for processing. Two realities to plan around: consular officers can call any dropbox applicant in for an interview after reviewing the case, and dropbox cases can enter administrative processing exactly like interview cases — the waiver waives the appointment, not the scrutiny.
Planning around it
Treat the passport-away period as unpredictable: do not book unmovable return travel against an assumed processing time, and check the portal's current guidance for each post's document-return times. Keep photocopies and digital scans of everything submitted.
If the questionnaire routes you to an interview instead — no appeal exists for that routing; book the interview and use our stamping guide. Families should check each member separately: one spouse qualifying for dropbox while the other interviews is common and manageable with separate appointments.
The drop-off checklist
Carry to the Visa Application Center: current passport plus any prior passport containing the previous US visa; the DS-160 confirmation page; the drop-off appointment confirmation; one photograph meeting current specifications (rules change — check the portal's photo tool); and the category documents — I-797 approval notice and employment verification for H-1B renewals, current I-20 with travel signature for F-1, employer letters for L-1 blanket cases.
Photocopy or scan everything before submission, note the tracking number the VAC issues, and monitor the passport through the portal's tracking — couriers require the tracking identity at delivery in many cities.
