Born in a Crisis: The Story of SOS Global Indians
Michael & Maneesha Khanna · Founders, SOS Global Indians · July 5, 2026
Every founder story has a moment. Ours was personal: in March 2020, as the world shut its borders overnight, Michael's mother was stranded in the United States with no flight home. Phone lines jammed, rules changed by the hour, and one thing became painfully clear — thousands of Indian families were living the exact same nightmare, each one convinced they were alone.
So we started a WhatsApp group. Friends, colleagues, anyone who could share a verified update or a working phone number. Within thirty minutes of moving it to Facebook, 270 people had joined. Within the first year, SOS Global Indians had reached over two million people. Today, our community stands nearly two hundred thousand members strong.
What did all those people do together? They brought each other home. Through the darkest stretches of the pandemic, members of this community tracked repatriation flights, decoded ever-shifting travel and immigration rules, procured and delivered COVID resources for families across India, filed petitions for stranded travelers, arranged medical assistance and mental health counselling, and sat with strangers — on calls, at midnight, across time zones — so that no one had to face a crisis alone.
And the world noticed. In 2021, SOS Global Indians was selected for Meta's Community Accelerator program — one of just thirteen communities chosen from India — receiving funding and training that helped us grow responsibly. Our story has been told by The Better India, on radio shows and interviews reaching Indians across continents. But the recognition that matters most has always come one message at a time: 'I don't know what we would have done without this group.'
The crises evolved, and so did we. After the flights came the visa backlogs. After the backlogs came the questions that never stop for anyone building a life abroad: How do I bring my parents here safely? Who is a lawyer I can actually trust? Where do I find a home near a good school and a proper grocery store? Who will sit with my father on a seventeen-hour flight? Our community answers these questions every single day.
Six years in, we reached a conclusion: a community this consequential deserves more than a scrolling feed. Answers get buried. Trusted businesses get asked about, recommended, and forgotten — fifty times over. The help our members give each other deserves a home that is organized, searchable, and permanent.
This platform is that home. It carries everything the community taught us — verify first, help fast, celebrate each other — into a place built for the next chapter. If you are new here: welcome. If you have been with us since the WhatsApp days: this is what we built together. Look around — you'll recognize the spirit immediately.
